William Timberlake Allen was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 2, 1926. After serving with the U. S. Army in World War II, he studied with Merritt Johnson at Northern State College in Aberdeen from 1946–1948. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition with Anthony Donato at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1950 and received his Master’s degree from the same institution in 1951. In 1954 he received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York where he studied with Bernard Rogers.

From 1953–1992 he was Professor of Theory and Composition at Houghton College in Houghton, New York and was Composer-in-Residence for many of those years. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1998.

Dr. Allen has written a ballet, operas, orchestral and chamber music, choral works, and has composed extensively for the piano and the organ. He was also an amateur poet, and the author of several plays and musicals performed at Houghton College. Many of his sacred organ compositions are dedicated to his wife, organist Jane McMahon Allen.

Dr. Allen died on December 29, 2016 after a brief illness.

“So shall it be at last,
in that bright morning,
when the soul waketh
and life’s shadows flee;
O in that hour,
fairer than daylight dawning,
shall rise the glorious thought,
I am with thee.”

— Harriet Beecher Stowe

List of Works

Dr. Allen wrote an enormous amount of music for many genres and instrumentations. The catalog below is not exhaustive, but it is as complete as it can be with the information currently available (December 31, 2025). Updates will be made to the list as necessary.

Special thanks go to Danny Lloyd White and his 1991 dissertation, “The Choral Works of William Allen.” Much of the list below comes from his Appendix A (p. 168), with corrections and additions by DJF.
